Cats Vs Dogs: When it comes to pet cleaning, which one makes your life easier?

Cats Vs Dogs: When it comes to pet cleaning, which one makes your life easier?

We all know that cats are independent creatures. They come and go as they please and pretty much do their own thing. Dogs are the opposite. They need your attention every day, for walking, for playing, for cuddling up on the sofa. But what about when it comes to pet cleaning? Are dogs easier to clean, or do cats make your life easier? Let’s have a look...

Self-grooming

Look closely at your cat’s tongue and you’ll notice it’s covered in tiny little spikes. These are there to help your cat keep itself clean. Every time it licks itself, what it’s doing is removing dead skins cells, excess hair and even fleas.

Dogs groom themselves too but there’s a difference. A cat’s body is much more flexible than a dog’s. So, while your cat can groom almost its entire body itself, a dog can really only reach between its hind legs and paws.

Going to the toilet

Cats aren’t dissimilar to humans when it comes to going to the toilet. Like us, they prefer to go in private when no one else is looking. They will also attempt to cover up their droppings, to stop the smell from spreading.

By contrast a dog will go pretty much anywhere, at least until you train it to go outside. When you’re toilet-training a dog, it’s not uncommon to have to put up with some unpleasant clean-up jobs while your dog learns where you want it to go.

Smell

Dogs are adventurous creatures. So, it’s not uncommon for them to run off and dive into muddy, fetid ponds whilst out on a walk. This means they often need a fair bit of human help to keep clean. After a long walk, your dog will need a good bath to help get them clean.

By contrast, your cat does an excellent job of keeping itself clean. It will spend up to half a day grooming itself, and this does a pretty decent job of removing any dander that causes bad smells.

Shedding hair

You might imagine that cats are more likely to shed their hair than dogs – and that’s true to a point. But actually, it really depends on the breed. Some breeds of cat, such as the American Bobtail, Norwegian Forest cat and Ragdoll, tend to shed a fair bit of fur. But equally if you own a German Shepherd, Golden Retriever or a Huskie, you’ll often find they leave their fur behind on your furniture when they’ve been sat on it.

Easiest to clean

Ever tried giving a cat a bath? It’s practically impossible! Cats are pretty self-sufficient and when it comes to staying clean, well, they like to take matters into their own hands. This is fine up to a point. But when it comes to things like nail clipping it can cause a problem. Trimming your cat’s nails is a two-person job. And even then, if your cat is not relaxed, it can quickly turn futile. By contrast, dogs are pretty comfortable with having their nails trimmed, their teeth cleaned and even having a bath. Which is a good thing too because dogs can get pretty grubby!
