10 simple habits healthy people have – and you can too!

Most of us try to improve our health and wellbeing at one time or another. It often starts around the turn of the year, and ramps up as you into summer. If you’re looking to tune up your mind and body in time for the warm weather, here are 10 things you can do right now to bring out your best self.

Drink more water

Good hydration is so important. It will help you feel less fatigued and more energetic. It’ll help ward off headaches and keep your skin looking clearer too. If you struggle to drink enough water, or you find you drink too many coffees or soft drinks, try buying yourself a good water bottle. Every time you finish a whole bottle it’ll prompt you to refill it, helping you stay hydrated..

Get a better night’s sleep

Ok, so this one might feel easier said than done. But you’d be amazed the difference an extra hour’s sleep can make to the way you feel in the morning. Try and go to sleep an hour earlier in the evening. Before you get into bed, give yourself at least half an hour of device-free time – maybe read a book, or take a shower instead. Then in the morning, don’t set an alarm, let yourself wake naturally.

Eat well

Think of the food you eat as the fuel your body needs. The better quality the fuel, the better your body will run. Not everyone has time to cook, but maybe start by adding in more fruit and vegetables. Have a banana with your breakfast, an apple with lunch and a salad with dinner. Just these simple steps can really up your nutrition levels.

Make time to have fun

Lots of us lead such busy lives that it’s hard to make time for fun. But you have to. Working endlessly and not having time to enjoy yourself, can leave you burnt out and frustrated. So, give yourself a window every week, or even better every day, to do something that makes you happy.

Get outdoors

When got a busy day at the office, it’s all too easy to get stuck indoors. But getting out in the fresh air is good for your mood. Plus, if it’s a sunny day, the vitamin D you get is great for your physical health, too.

Switch off your phone

Your smartphone may be the thing that helps you organize your life, but if you’re not careful it can start to control it too. It’s good for your mental health to switch off now and again, ideally an hour before you go to bed. Also, try not reaching for your phone until you’ve showered, dressed and eaten in the morning – you’ll feel better for it.

Connect with people

If you spend too much time by yourself, you might find you start feeling lonely. The best cure for loneliness is mixing with other people. So, every now and then, drop a text to an old friend you haven’t seen a in a while. Connecting with others is great for your mental wellbeing.

Curb the sugar

We all like a sweet treat now and again. But remember that sugar has all sorts of nasty effects on the body. If you can, try to swap some of the sweets you enjoy for healthier alternatives, like fruit. Your body will feel better for it.

Take a deep breath

We all take breathing for granted but it’s amazing how powerful paying attention to your breathing can be. At lunchtime, or before bed, try lying down and closing your eyes for five minutes, concentrating on the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe – it’s very relaxing!

Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly isn’t just good for your physical health, it’s good for your mental wellbeing too. Any exercise which gets you a bit out of breath and sweaty, blood pumping, is good. And you don’t even have to leave the house to do it.
